Notice and Order – Amendments to Rules 1:20-9 and 1:28B-3 to Allow Third-Party Referrals to NJ LAP, Including by OAE
In 2024, The Supreme Court of New Jersey amended previous rules in order to allow the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program to accept “Third-Party Referrals” regarding concern for a NJ lawyer, law student, or judge. Confidentiality is maintained. You can read the ruling here. Below is helpful information to determine if you colleague, friend, family member, etc. is dealing with substance use or mental health issues. If the party you are concerned about is yourself, call us. It’s Confidential.


What Can You Do?

Are You Seeing Any of These Signs?
- spends a lot of time engaging in activities related to use of drugs and/or alcohol
- uses drugs and/or alcohol in greater quantities or for a longer time than intended
- reduces or eliminates participation in other activities because of use of drugs and/or alcohol
- problems at work, home, or school because of the use of drugs and/or alcohol
- regularly using drugs and/or alcohol and then doing something physically dangerous
- continues use of drugs and/or alcohol despite problems with family, friends, or law enforcement

Are You Seeing Any of These Signs?
- Pulling away from people and usual activities
- Acting like nothing matters
- Appearing helpless or hopeless
- Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than ususal
- Periods of being unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
- Yelling or fighting with family and friends
- Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
- Threats or talk of self-harm or harming others
- Inability to perform daily tasks, like taking care of kids or getting to work
