Team Clinician

Reports To: NJLAP Director

Status: Exempt

Education & Credentials: LCSW, LPC, LMFT or clinical psychologist (or equivalent) licensed in New Jersey or able to obtain licensure within six months of employment.

Position Overview:

Provide telephone consultations, education, support, crisis intervention, assessment, limited individual counseling, and/or appropriate referrals pertaining to alcohol and/or substance use and/or other mental health and well-being concerns for lawyers, judges, law students, and law graduates. Facilitate all aspects of case management and consult with other NJLAP team regarding foregoing and providing supports to individuals in emotional distress.

Maintain timely, accurate, and detailed documentation of all case activity, including but not limited to correspondence with relevant outside third parties. The Team Clinician will also be expected to engage in other, various activities undertaken by NJLAP including, but not limited to, outreach, presentations, coordination with law schools, authoring articles for the New Jersey Law Journal and other publications, and keeping abreast of current developments in the fields of alcohol and substance use disorders, mental health, and monitoring by participating in state and national organizations and conducting independent analysis and research. Conduct comprehensive evaluations and provide written reports to Board of Bar Examiners’ Committee on Character for bar candidates who have been directed to obtain such evaluations.  Research and evaluate need for NJLAP’s first limited, voluntary monitoring program for law students, judges, bar candidates and lawyers who wish to engage in monitoring program to strengthen and support their recovery and obtain documentation of their efforts to get and stay clean and sober or compliant with their individualized monitoring program. Depending on outcome of foregoing research, assist in development and implementation of volunteer training program.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the accurate assessment of alcohol and substance use disorders, process addictions, mental and emotional illness, and personality disorders.
  • Conduct one-on-one client consultations
  • Plan and facilitate group counseling and educational workshops
  • Provide advice, guidance and case management advice to other NJLAP staff as needed or appropriate
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Assist in updating NJLAP’s confidentiality policies and procedures and developing other best practices as appropriate.
  • Promote and teach such well-being skills as practicing self-care, finding balance, and managing major life transitions.
  • Provide information on NJLAP program, issues pertaining to recovery and well-being, and other information as requested, as well as education, support, and guidance to judges, attorneys, and law students throughout the State of New Jersey.
  • Conduct comprehensive bio psychosocial assessments and prepare written evaluations.
  • Participate in utilization review of monitoring efforts in a team setting with other NJLAP team members.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures as delineated by Program Director and the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA).
  • Assist in development, implementation and management of volunteer training program
  • Keep accurate record of clinical activities for statistical reports
  • Improve and develop NJLAP record-keeping practices
  • Provide services related to the program outside of the State Bar office, at the Program Director’s discretion.
  • Participate in other, various activities undertaken by NLJAP, such as, but not limited to, outreach, presentations, coordination with law schools, authoring articles, and keeping abreast of current developments in the areas of addiction, mental health, and monitoring.
  • Occasional out of state travel for conferences (1-3 times per year)
  • Explore development of voluntary monitoring program and if implemented, develop, formulate and execute contractual agreements for monitoring, diversionary or otherwise, in response to referrals from outside sources such as employers or bar discipline.
  • Facilitate all aspects of monitoring of said agreements, such as, but not limited to, staffing the case with the NJLAP team, assign providers, establish a testing protocol, and coordinate with all involved parties.

 

Required skills, credentials, and experience:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.
  • Current New Jersey Licensure as clinical psychologist, LCSW, LPC or similar, or verifiable ability to obtain same within six months of hire
  • Some experience treating individuals with mental health/substance use disorders,
  • Familiarity with individual, group, and family work in formal treatment as well as in support groups
  • Presentation/public speaking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a team player, able to communicate and deal with stress as an effective member of a team.
  • Must have the ability to balance empathy with accountability.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state of New Jersey, in private insured vehicle or other means of transportation.  This position will require some travel.
  • Attend educational conferences and maintain professional credentials
  • Knowledge and familiarity of the DSM 5

 

Desirable credentials, skills, and experience

  • JD or other experience with legal professionals
  • LCADC credentials or plan to earn same
  • Supervision credential
  • MH First Aid or Emotional CPR teacher training
  • Significant substantive experience treating individuals with mental health/substance use disorders, including experience working with impaired professionals or individuals who are court ordered to treatment.
  • Significant experience with individual, group, and family work in formal treatment as well as in support groups
  • Familiarity with workings of external EAPs, providing assessment, referral, and consultation services
  • Experience treating legal or medical professionals
  • Training experience

Program Assistant

Reports To: Office Administrator, Program Director, and Communications Manager

Status: Hourly Employee

Position Overview:


This position provides extensive administrative support to the New Jersey Lawyer Assistance Program (NJLAP).  Although the duties of this position will be varied and subject to program needs, the primary focus of this position will be in three areas: 1. NJLAP client and team service and support, 2. Resource development and coordination, and 3. Supplementing and enhancing NJLAP’s record-keeping practices including data-entry and scanning of old paper files.

The program assistant will handle NJLAP routine administrative tasks from answering the phone and ordering supplies to supporting event planning. We are seeking someone with excellent people skills, both with external clients and with colleagues on a small team. Our future program assistant is a flexible and tenacious problem-solver, has a comforting and encouraging telephone disposition (able to handle calls from individuals in significant distress), and thrives in a dynamic, small-team environment.  Personal lived experience with mental illness and alcohol and substance use disorders is a plus.  Individuals in recovery from an alcohol or substance use disorder with a sustained period of continuous sobriety and a strong grounding in the twelve-step recovery model are encouraged to apply.

Principal Responsibilities:

A. NJLAP client and team service and support

  • Initial screening and intake info from callers.
  • Refer additional calls/requests to appropriate staff, be proactive in the event of crisis calls.
  • Assist as needed at group meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Create event emails, rsvp and attendance lists.
  • Follow-up with clients as directed by NJLAP counseling team and director and pair with appropriate resources as available and required.
  • Manage and maintain team calendars and work with NJLAP team members to identify opportunities to automate routine tasks.
  • Assist with in-house direct mail production, including proofreading mailing lists and merge/printing
  • Work with other team members to ensure sufficient levels of office supplies and promotional materials. Serve as primary point of contact with NJSBA facilities department.
  • Scan materials as needed, archive accordingly.
  • Assist in preparing presentation materials for conferences and other events.
  • Perform administrative duties as required
  • Other duties as assigned

B. Research and development of community referral sources and development of NJLAP resource and referral network. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Calling mental health and other treatment providers to determine suitability and availability to serve as NJLAP resources and entry of same into Resource Database.
  • Calling career, executive and occupational coaches and similar resources and determining suitability for NJLAP referrals
  • Identifying members of legal community who would be suitable candidates for future volunteer training program and pair NJLAP volunteers with NJLAP clients under supervision of NJLAP Director and counseling staff
  • Matching clients with treatment professionals and treatment centers according to their needs, health insurance and ability to pay
  • Learn about landscape of New Jersey area treatment centers and their interactions with health insurance.

C. NJLAP Record-keeping

  • Update and maintain accurate client information in Salesforce.
  • Create events and groups in in Salesforce and generate online registration forms using Formidable Forms under supervision and direction of Office Administrator.
  • Support Office Administrator in continued updating of training manual and assist NJLAP staff on proper use and best practices in using Salesforce as needed.
  • Assist in maintenance of confidential filing system for client records, archiving and shredding as necessary according to office protocol.
  • Scan and upload old paper files and destroy as necessary.
  • Data-entry in Salesforce

Required skills and experience:

  • Proficient with Office 365 and Windows 10 and 11 Operating Systems and general affinity for technology and office automations
